MANKHURD COMMUNITY VISIT

This time we collaborated with the PCGT for the visit. PCGT (Public Concern for Governance Trust) Mumbai is a non-profit organization based in Mumbai, India. It was founded in the year 2002 with the primary objective of fighting corruption and promoting good governance in the country.. The PCGT has a beautiful programme under it, named “Kuchh Aur”. It focuses on Value education for responsible citizens and we selected BMC Schools, Private schools and aided schools in Mumbai. Its aim is to inculcate values. Its Sessions with students allow them to interact freely and understand why values are important in daily life. Ms. Hemangi Sawant, the Programme Executive for PCGT’s Kuchh Aur programme was also present with our Pro Bono Team

On 17th May 2023 a group of Pro Bono Associates from the Maharashtra National Law University Mumbai carried out a Legal Awareness program at the Community Centre of Janjagruti Vidhyarthi Sangh, Mankhurd. Total 44 students were present during the session. The main objective of the visit was to inculcate the values of a model citizen in these children by explaining the importance of Fundamental Duties. The associates discussed about the qualities of a modal citizen and the importance of fundamental duties.. They explained the children about the responsibility of each citizen to abide by the Constitution and respect the National Flag, National Anthem and values leading to freedom struggle.

The session started with a quick revision of the last session conducted by the Pro Bono Club on Fundamental Rights and the Constitution of India. Then the session further progressed to discussing the qualities of a model citizen and the importance of fundamental duties. The Pro Bono Associates explained all the 11 Fundamental Duties to the children. The importance of peace, harmony, brotherhood and tolerance to other cultures was also discussed in great detail. Further, a clean environment and a display of patriotism by rendering national services when required were also given importance. Each duty was explained to them with many relevant examples so they could understand it better. The students were encouraged to follow these duties daily. Further, a Drawing Competition was conducted on the theme of the Constitution of India, Fundamental Rights, Fundamental Duties and the Preamble. All the children showed great participation in this competition and made very unique drawings based on their understanding of the given theme and the session. In conclusion, the legal awareness visit at the centre was an important step in spreading awareness about legal rights and duties among the underprivileged sections of society.

There was a very enthusiastic participation of the children for the session. This session proved to be highly interactive and children were able to answer all of the questions of the Associates. The children were able to recognize their important role as citizens of India and the duties they must perform. Children responded positively to the program and expressed a desire to learn more. Such legal awareness programs can be extremely beneficial in terms of empowering citizens and fostering a more just and equitable society. The visit was an eye-opener for the children, who learned about their rights and duties as responsible citizens of India
